Why Choose Kindred Counseling Center?

Personalized care for your story

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and you deserve a provider who takes the time to understand your story. Tyisha Woodroffe has spent 20 years in the mental health field and 15 years as a licensed clinician, with specialized training in EMDR for trauma recovery. As a boutique practice, Kindred Counseling Center keeps caseloads small so every client receives focused, individualized care rather than a one size fits all approach. Sessions are available in person at our Frederick, Maryland office or virtually through a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform.

Kindred Counseling Center specializes in

Trauma therapy and EMDR

We help you process difficult experiences at a pace that feels safe and steady.

EMDR and trauma-informed therapy support relief from patterns that still carry the weight of the past.

Anxiety

Anxiety often shows up in the body as much as in anxious thoughts.

Together we build practical tools so daily life feels more grounded and manageable.

Depression

When motivation and hope feel out of reach, you still deserve steady support.

Therapy focuses on small, meaningful steps toward feeling like yourself again.

PTSD

Post-traumatic stress can leave you on high alert long after the event.

We work to soften triggers and help your nervous system feel safer in the present.

Individual therapy for women navigating life transitions

Big changes can stir grief, identity questions, and overwhelm.

This space is for women sorting through what is next with clarity and self-compassion.

Every treatment plan is built around your specific needs, so you always feel like an active partner in your own healing.

What is EMDR… Let's break it down

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps your brain process painful memories so they lose their grip on daily life. It is not hypnosis, and it does not require you to relive every detail out loud.

Many people notice shifts in how they react to triggers—less flooding, less avoidance, more room to live. If you have read about EMDR and still feel unsure, that is normal.

If you want more of the clinical picture: EMDR is an evidence-based, phased approach grounded in the Adaptive Information Processing model—the view that, with the right support, the brain can move toward healing much as the body repairs an injury. In session, bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements) is paired with focused attention on target memories, helping the brain reprocess what still feels stuck so distress can decrease and more helpful beliefs can emerge. Patient education from EMDRIA, the professional association for EMDR therapists, goes deeper on how the phases work.

The Kindred difference

Therapy that respects how much you have already tried

You do not need another therapist who rushes to solutions. You need someone who can hold complexity, move at your pace, and offer tools that actually reach the nervous system — not just the talking part.

  • Boutique, individualized care

Small caseloads mean every client receives focused attention — not a one size fits all approach.

  • EMDR respects your brain, your pace and your experience

    This treatment is client led.

What to Expect

A comfortable first step

Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, and we want that first step to feel comfortable. After you schedule a consultation, you'll have space to talk about what brought you to therapy, and to discover what healing looks and feels like for you. From there, we will build a treatment plan around your goals, using EMDR and other trauma informed methods at a pace that feels right for you. Sessions are available in person or by telehealth, whichever works best for your schedule and comfort level.

Quiet moment of reflection by a sunlit window
“You have already survived what happened to you. Therapy is not about proving that—it is about giving your nervous system room to finally stand down. We go at your pace, with warmth and clarity, until the past stops running the present.”
